Study of facial expressions

For this project, I was interested in studying peoples’ faces. I have always been drawn towards portraiture as an artist and wanted to figure out why. To start this project off, I set up a photographic studio where I held intimate, and totally confidential interviews. During these interviews I attempted to discretely capture the emotions showed on the sitters’ faces. I was interested in capturing those involuntary, “true” expressions, the ones that allude to how a person is feeling.

At this point I really used my time to explore and experiment with different surfaces and materials. To an artist, materials can be as expressive as a face. I loved seeing how I could push the concept through the materials that I was using. To read a more in-depth explanation of the process and the work, please have a look at the catalogue.
